a lionfish-eye view: the story of an invasive species

Williams-Mystic Professors Sofia Zepeda (Maritime History) and Tim Pusack (Marine Ecology) will present an interdisciplinary investigation of the invasive Lionfish, Pterios volitans. They will discuss current research, control efforts, and the language used to describe lionfish and invasive species in general, and then have open time for questions and discussion.

Meet other alums and have fun helping Williams-Mystic by participating in work projects on the WM campus. From yard work and gardening to window, van and boat washing and small maintenance projects, there are kid-friendly activities too! Sign up ahead of time at this link and wear your work clothes.

oceanus Gallery talk

2:30-3:15pm, Collins Gallery, Thompson Building (new North entrance building)

Come to an exclusive gallery talk by our own Dr. Jim Carlton and Curator of Collections, Krystal Rose, who collaborated with artist Alexis Rockman on the content and inspiration for this compelling new exhibit that uses art to inspire conversations and awareness around critical ocean issues.

3:00-4:00pm, Carlton Marine Science Center

Check out the Carlton Center’s brand new state of the art aquarium system – including touch tanks! Williams-Mystic Marine Ecology Professor Tim Pusack, Lab Manager Laurie Warren S89, and new Geology professor Lloyd Anderson will be on hand to answer questions and show you the system.

Gather at the end of the day for a brief program update and presentation from faculty and Executive Director Tom Van Winkle P’F08, and socialize with fellow alumni with lawn games, s’mores and fire pits.

September 23 is also Seaport Member Appreciation Night! From 5-7pm, the museum is open after hours just for members, with free boat rides, music, toy boats, and cash bar. Members are invited to bring guests for free. Information to register (or become a member) is here.
